It's been a long 35 years since Joe Dante's 1990 sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch, but it appears the wait for a third Gremlins film may be coming to a close.

Third Gremlins Film Reportedly On Way

The franchise found new life in 2022 with animated prequel series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai and the follow-up Gremlins: The Wild Batch last year. And it now appears that the prequel series could be the set-up for a new Gremlins film from Warner Brothers & original writer Christopher Columbus. As reported by Deadline-

Franchise hopes abound down the road in Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Practical Magic 2, DC’s Clayface and Supergirl, Drew Goddard’s incoming script for a new Matrix, a new Gremlins from Christopher Columbus and a Goonies treatment.

This is definitely promising news, despite the film being stuck in development hell for the past eight years. Last we heard was from Columbus himself in August 2017 in an interview with SlashFilm when he described the Gremlins 3 script he penned as "twisted and dark", as well as assuring fans we won't be getting CGI Gremlins over puppets & practical SFX.

"I'm really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we'll see. It's always a budgetary conversation when we're going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we'll see that movie soon."

"Oh, without a doubt, minimal CGI. CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier. It was brutal. It was like a marathon every night for those guys. In the bar scene alone there were 18 [or] 20 people behind the bar. No one had any space to move. It was just hellish for those guys so CGI will simplify that a little bit but it's all puppets."

More to follow as we learn it.
