The film was originally set to release in cinemas May 15th 2020, however due to the ongoing CoVid-19 situation worldwide and quarantine/lockdown rules still in effect Warner Bros. have re-thought the release of Scoob! As the film has now been completed, they are looking to push forward with a release straight to digital to allow audiences to watch it from the safety and comfort of their own homes. Warner Bros. chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff made the announcement earlier today.
“While we’re all eager to be able to once again show our films in theaters, we’re navigating new, unprecedented times which call for creative thinking and adaptability in how we distribute our content. We know fans are eager to see Scoob! and we’re delighted we can deliver this feel-good movie for families to enjoy while they’re home together.”
The news was revealed today via Deadline as the studio rethinks its entire releasing strategy during these difficult times. Scoob! will be available on selected Video On Demand services for a 48-hour rental on it's original release date (15th May 2020). Even if the quarantine is lifted (or relaxed in some way) and cinemas do reopen mid-May, Scoob! will not be playing in cinemas.
"Scoob! will be available for a 48-hour rental PVOD period for U.S. $19.99, or EST price of $24.99."
As various studios experiment with alternative ways to release their films Warner Bros. is hoping that Scoob! will be able to follow in the same footsteps as Trolls World Tour. Universal made the decision to release the animated sequel to the 2016 film via VOD services and it has made an estimated revenue of between $40 and $50 Million in the US during its opening weekend alone.
The new animated feature follows how lifelong friends Scooby and Shaggy first met and how they joined with young detectives Fred, Velma and Daphne to form the famous Mystery Inc. Now, with hundreds of cases solved and adventures shared, Scooby and the gang face their biggest, most challenging mystery ever: a plot to unleash the ghost dog Cerberus upon the world. As they race to stop this global “dogpocalypse,” the gang discovers that Scooby has a secret legacy and an epic destiny greater than anyone imagined.
