Following the success of 2022's Prey, 20th Century Studios is moving ahead with an eighth film in the Predator series titled Badlands.
Badlands is a new standalone film in the franchise moving into pre-production with Trachtenberg on board to direct having co-wrote the script. As reported by Deadline the film is expecting to shoot late 2024.
"Dan Trachtenberg is returning to write and direct Badlands, a new standalone pic in the franchise that is expected to shoot later this year. The film is a high priority for the studio and sources say Trachtenberg and execs are already meeting with talent for the lead role. Trachtenberg co-wrote script with Patrick Aison."
Plot details are being kept quiet at the moment, but we all know it'll feature our beloved hunter in some form or another. Whether or not this will feature a Predator we've seen previously or a slight re-design as Trachtenberg's Prey boldly did two years ago isn't known either.
Release plans have also been kept under wraps, but hopefully this will get the theatrical release Prey should have had. There's definitely scope there for a theatrical run after the previous streaming release backlash. When it did premiere, it broke streaming records for Hulu whilst earning some of the best reviews in the franchise’s history. Furthermore it went on to pick up multiple nominations and a win at this years Emmys.
It does appear this in turn has kicked some life back into the franchise with several other projects reportedly in development by 20th Century Studios. One of which includes a direct sequel to Prey that would "return to the films original setting and with the films star, Amber Midthunder, potentially returning".
